HISTORY & VALUES

Coastal Mangrove Ecosystem

Malaka Lestari Indonesia is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in 2023 by a multidisciplinary coalition of professionals, including former international NGO staff, national journalists, medical doctors, and academics.

The name MALAKA is a deliberate acronym representing the three primary pillars of the organisation's conservation mandate:

MA
Mangrove
LA
Lamun (Seagrass)
KA
Karang (Coral Reefs)

Combined with LESTARI (the Indonesian word for Sustainability) and INDONESIA, the name signifies the organisation's core mission: securing the long-term ecological viability of marine and coastal ecosystems across the Indonesian archipelago, with a primary geographic focus on the critical coastlines and small islands of Sumatra bordering the Malacca Strait.
